This is good, and C.Atkins was obviously a fantastic guitarist, but definitely MY favorite WDR is The Ventures.

In 1960, I was 4 yrs old when the Ventures came out with THEIR version, and their debut single 45rpm. I remember it distinctly playing on the radio.

Many versions are great. Chet Atkins does a great one. Like Beatles songs, they can be interpreted by many different artists, if they are great!!!

How I feel today and most days for that matter. Love this recording.

The version by John Barry Seven (1960) was my bench mark for this number. The Ventures and The Shadows were ‘other versions’ . I guess most of us regard the first version we hear as the real one. This version has opened my eyes! Back to practicing!

What a tasty player and chops galore. I was 2 years old when this was recorded. Don Lamond was my first real drum teacher when I was in my teens. Thanks for posting.

I really like this original version. The Ventures certainly simplified it, and Chet did a great cover before the Ventures. It is one of the first songs I learned, aside from some Duane Eddy tunes.

I like Johnny Smith but the Ventures version of this song is clearly better.

Johnny Smith was to me the epitome of jazz guitarists in the style of the first electric guitarist, Charlie Christian. His perfection and cleanliness showed us all that one can be soulful without being sloppy, and there are no wasted notes no matter how fast he gets ... they always fit!!
