Apparently a "difficult" man, but unquestionably a supreme musician and this, for me, is the greatest instrumental version of this magnificent song.
He took the clarinet to perfection, he played an octave higher than the rest. He was moody, difficult to live with, by his own admission, but he was a genius. He put the clarinet down when he was about 45 and NEVER played it again. When asked why, he said there was nothing more he could do with it, so rather than insult the music, he never played again. He died at age 94. The arrangements he wrote were complex, pure magic.
