If you want to join the gates
When they’re at the their best
And meet a couple of future dates
Well, Roger I suggest —
Hop in the old jallop
And head for the malted shop
And all the cats join in
Down goes my last two bits
Comes up one banana split
And all the cats join in
Now drop your jack in the old juke box
Play your favourite disc
When you dance with the bobby socks
You dance at your own risk
Rip! Everybody swing
Yes, swing 'till the rafters ring
And all the cats join in!
Man..keep jiving..my father, a muso, told me the story goes that Benny was a frustrated singer, I actually have the original version with Benny singing. Still the tops all these years later,. I was born in the wrong generation!
I read, some years ago, that Benny really would have loved to sing!! I have a wonderful version of this song where Benny does sing the lyrics..and, boy does he swing them!!!
I have this dream were I time travelled back to the 50s. I went to the Malt Shop and just sitting and watching people at my age dancing to this song (Though this song was from the 40s) plays from the jukebox. And then suddenly, one dude came up and asked me to dance with him and we danced joyfully. After the dance, we ordered two sodas and we spending time together.
Swing is more close to what music is to the average jazz fan, don’t get me wrong, I’d love to hear Benny and Dizzy play together, Bop and Swing are more alike than not..
