Personally, I love this original version more than the legendary dream team version-with miles Davis, John Coltrane- I think the piano rhythm is the key of the overall atmospheres.
Many years ago when I was a young man I spent a winter in Copenhagen Denmark. My plans for the 2 months kinda went astray so I decided to just try and fit in and enjoy being a Texas kid spending a winter in a foreign land. Being a early riser I would have everything I needed to do done by mid morning then back to my flat turn on the coffee pot dial in some Bill Evans and have a couple Christiania smokes and stare out the window. I did not socialize very much but did meet a Danish girl who would stop by often. One day she told me...I am fascinated by your Texas accent but the fact you like this type of music is even better....
It tells a special story and your story if your brave enough to enter it. Listen to it and hear your life from beginning to end to beginning again. Beautiful
Oh yea....Sitting in a remote train stop in the Ardennes Forrest waiting for the train and a bit of rain and of course a good smoke. Bill made a couple changes in Flamenco Sketches but it was his song. Miles Davis was a very smart man and he knew he was dealing with a genius in Bill Evans.
Of course Bill Evans composed this. I’m a fan of Davis’ recordings from the late ‘50s, but I believe this piece to be beyond his compostional capacity. I also believe Bill Evans more than likely introduced Davis to modal playing.
