I read somwhere that in 1927 after playing the Roseland Club Red Nichols and some of his group went to a near by speakeasy to prepare for a Brunswick recording session the next day. For a bit of fun Red Nichols and Fud Livinston each made up a song Red Last Dollar and Fud Feeling no pain. At the end of the recording session there was time for one more cut they chose Feeling no pain because no vocalist was available.
