The ONLY female vocalist in mainstream popular music to seriously challenge Mariah Carey in overall vocal agility is Debelah Morgan.There is no way that Christina Aguilera, for instance, could replicate that scale run for the following reasons: (1) Debelah Morgan is highly classically trained, having studied with one of the world’s most famous operatic sopranos, Faye Robinson. (2) She has a fully integrated voice from bottom to top, unlike Christina.(3) She adapts classical coloratura technique to ‘pop’ music, one much superior to Christina’s rough, rather rudimentary technique. In fact, everyone ought to watch Debelah’s live performance of ‘Close To You’ on BET and pay particular attention to her incredible staccato run—while enunciating—at the end of the song. Christina Aguilera simply doesn’t have the technical skill to replicate that.
