I have read that Ethel Waters was the first female to sing St. Louis Blues in public. It had supposedly first been performed by a female impersonator. There are so many songs over the years that have her almost inimitable mark on them; almost but not totally inimitable or no singers would attempt to sing them once Ethel Waters had put her imprint on so many standards.
