The alien story is correct, but I also believe it draws parallels with modern day life and the evil world we live in.He sees a world ( dreams ) full of happier people living better lives with no fears like war - and we could all have the same IF WE CHOSE TO - but we just keep to our routines and the state suppresses the truth about those good things we could have so as to control us.
