L.A. proved too much for the man
So he’s leavin' the life he’s come to know
He said he’s goin' back to find
Ooh, what’s left of his world
The world he left behind Not so long ago
He’s leaving
On that midnight train to Georgia
And he’s goin' back
To a simpler place and time
And I’ll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
I’d rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine
He kept dreamin'
That someday he’d be a star.
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don’t always come true.
So he pawned all his hopes
And he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket back
To the life he once knew,
Oh yes he did, He said he would
And now he’s leavin
On that midnight train to Georgia
He said he’s goin' back
To a simpler place and time
I’ll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
I’d rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine
Go, gonna board
Gonna board
Gonna board the midnight train.
Gotta go, gonna board
Gonna board
Gonna board the midnight train
29-year-old skinny gay white boy listening to this in 2019! One of the most beautiful, heartbreaking songs ever written...it shows the darker side of life where hard work and wishing don’t measure up— “dreams don’t always come true”—the sacrifices that love takes (the narrator is giving up EVERYTHING to be with her lover). That line—“I’d rather live in his world, than live without him in mine”—sums up what it means to love someone with everything you have. Thank you, Ms. Knight and the Pips, for giving us this treasure. And thank you to my parents to introducing me to this music as a kid! :)
Years ago she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in which I am a member. At times she does free shows for the members. Very down and sweet sister.
