Song is about the Peasant rebellion that inspired the Dutch War of Independence. It is believed that the Catholic/Protestant issue was the ultimate "driving wedge" that split the Netherlands from Spanish Hapsburg Germany. Interestingly poor little (what became) Belgium almost became a serious casualty in that war.
