Perfect Light
The harmonica has always been generally treated as a novelty instrument and that is because it is so accessible. Any child can play Camptown Races in 10 minutes on a diatonic, but how many are able to improvise freely on a chromatic, articulating notes seamlessly, make key shifts, and play in keys the instrument was never designed for. When you can do that and then watch Larry or Toots you are in awe, but also overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude that they established once and for all that the harmonica stands on the same rung as all other reed instruments. Larry remains the giant among classical players. Great modern English composers Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote pieces specifically for him. And there has never been a better interpreter of Gershwin, even among vocalists. He was a great virtuoso, if that world means anything, on of the greatest of the 20th century.
